Quite simply, the authors of these erotic books wished to remain anonymous. The stories were often written in a period when respectable members of society publicly condemned anything considered indecent by society, while at night, behind closed doors, they secretly poured over tomes of erotica from the more sensual East. Quite often the stories were banned from publication for many years. Many of these erotic stories are now considered masterpieces of the classic erotica genre.
